Career Toolkits
Purpose:
- Relevant to the Life-Span, Life-Space Theory, The Life Roles Rainbow asks participants to reflect on key life roles, creating a visual representation.
- Roles included in the Rainbow are: Child, Student, Leisurite, Citizen, Worker, Parent, Partner, Homemaker, Pensioner.
Benefits:
- Once the rainbow is completed participants are encouraged to then reflect on how they might improve the rainbow.
Interpretation:
- Life-Span, Life-Space Theory indicates that stress can occur when roles come into conflict and needs are not being met.
- The Rainbow can be used to view these possible conflicts reducing stress with the goal of long-term happiness and balance.
Possible limitations:
- Life roles are becoming more fluid and can become hard to separate with developing technologies and more flexible work
environments.
Ethical Consideration:
- Life-Span, Life-Space Theory does not take into consideration working different populations, disabilities and Social economic statues.

Humanmetrics Personality Test
Purpose:
-Creates a 4 letter personality code based on the Myers Briggs:
-Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I), Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N), Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F), Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)
Benefits:
- Personality codes can help make recommendations to guide Job options.
Interpretation Guidance:
- Upon completion of the Humanmetrics Personality Test, participants are provided a 4 letter personality code and a list of possible careers that might appeal to this personality type.
Limitations:
- Personality tests can have issues with reliability and predicted validity meaning they can be used to reflect on traits and not used to dictate choices (Tshimula et al., 2026).
Ethical Considerations
- When interpreting Personality types and recommended jobs one should be aware that these are recommendations and not be used to limit job searches.
- Personality tests could be used to pigeonhole people or personality types.
- Though Personality testing to explore possible career fit is a good starting point, there is concern that results can be bias, not culturally sensitive, and overly generalized (Tshimula et al., 2026).
(Humanmetrics Inc., 2025)
Purpose:
- Holland Code (RIASEC) Test aims to identify individuals' interests based on 6 different types:
- Realistic (Doers), Investigative (Thinkers), Artistic (Creators), Social (Helpers), Enterprising (Persuaders), Conventional (Organizers)
Benefits:
- The goal of identifying an individual's interests is that people thrive in environments that match their interests.
Interpretation Guidance:
- This test will provide a 3 letter code corresponding to the top 3 interests.
- Recommendations for different careers can then be generated based on these 3 letter codes.
Limitations:
- Dividing people into 6 dimensions does not pain a full picture of the person losing relevant information such as lived experience, skills gender, etc. which might affect job interest and enjoyment (Gunz et al., 2020, p. 80).
Ethical Considerations:
- Like other assessments results from the Holland Code (RIASEC) test is to reflect on interests and should not be used to limit choices.
- Practitioners need to utilize cultural competency to apply to diverse populations.

MyPlan: Values Assessment
Purpose:
- Provides a score to indicate an individuals values:
- Working Conditions, Recognition, Relationships, Support, Achievement, Independence.
Benefits:
- This assessment aims to help individuals identify their values and seek out careers that reflect these values.
Interpretation Guidance:
- This assessment provides a ranked list of Values with workplace considerations.
Limitations:
- This assessment is that it is a self-report self-ranking assessment that can be affected by individual bias.
- This Assessment is intended to be entertainment, it should be used to allow individuals to reflect on employment values and not as a psychometric test (MyPlan :: Assessment :: Values Assessment, 2019).
- Value Assessments in relation to career development needs more research to establish predictive validity, reliability and eliminate potential bias (Wenya et al., 2024) (Solanki et al., 2023).
Ethical Considerations:
- Studies indicate that more research is needed regarding assessment of values in relation to different cultures and groups that could be considered when interpreting.
(MyPlan :: Assessment :: Values Assessment, 2019)
Purpose:
- Create a detailed time sensitive road map to career development
Benefits:
- Making "SMART" Goals allows individuals to set goals with a higher chance of following through (Yasar, 2022).
Interpretation Guidance:
- Goals are self-directive and should be achievable.
- Creating a goal timeline and schedule to review goals can keep goals relevant and stay motivated.
Limitations:
- One should be aware of issues outside on control when identifying goals and short-term steps.
Ethical Considerations:
- Failing to achieve a goal should be seen as an opportunity and not a set back
-Below I have provided a Google Doc that illustrates how one might take scores from the provided assessments and create a SMART career goal, with an example.
